However, in softball the
concept of "good hit-no field" doesn't work. First Base is a
position that requires a good fielder. The stretch for the throw
is very important when you have 60' bases and good athletes
running. Fielders can often "play" the ball. The good ones
have the quickness to determine at what point they will play the
ball. At First Base (and Third Base) you are so close to the
hitter there is no time or distance to "play" the ball. You
pretty much have to allow the ball to play you and rely on your
reflexes. At First Base you have the added problem of dealing with low,
high and wide throws. The "in-between hop"and the wide
throw demand quick hands and quick thinking.
